Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
